Working With an Interior Designer
In selecting a designer, it is important to:
- Appreciate his/her design process
- Understand the fee structure and services included
- Be aware of the timeframe and milestones
- Be clear with scope of the project and your budget
- Feel comfortable discussing personal issues with the designer
Before your first meeting with your chosen designer:
- Collect pictures of furnishings and rooms that you love
- Consider your functional needs
- Review your preferences and styles
- Make a check list of things you want to discuss with your designer
- Differentiate your “must haves” from your wish list
At your first meeting with your chosen designer:
- Describe your desired outcome for the space, using general terms and pictures for clarity
- Bring up specific issues you want to address
- Reference your check list for each area/room
- Understand the process: your designer will not have an immediate solution or answer to your design dilemma
- Be an active participant in the process
During the project:
- Be courteous and considerate to your designer and the staff
- Ask questions if something is not clear
- Be flexible: there are some variables your designer has no control over
- Be available to answer questions
- Make decisions promptly
Upon completion:
- Review and create a punch list with the designer of any items that need adjustments
- Enjoy your beautiful new space!
